Transparency

As one of the nation’s largest national community service organisations, Mission Australia strives to be transparent in everything we do. Each year we work to deliver the most accurate and honest report we can for our donors, partners, staff and clients so that they know we are using our money shrewdly and getting the best outcomes from our resources.

In April 2011 Mission Australia’s high standard of reporting and public accountability was recognised with a prestigious PwC Transparency Award in the greater than $20m revenue category.

The PwC Transparency Awards are undertaken in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (the Institute) and the Centre for Social Impact (CSI). Previous to winning the 2010 PwC accolade, Mission Australia had been runner-up in the PwC Transparency Awards for our reporting in 2008-09 and a Top 10 finalist for 2007-08.

The awards recognise the quality and transparency of reporting among Australian charities, and encourage not-for-profits to be more professional in their reporting.

Communicating with stakeholders

As part of our commitment to transparency, Mission Australia must continue to ensure that our stakeholders have a clear understanding of our work and vision for the future. For this reason we regularly communicate with our regular donors, corporate partners and valued philanthropic supporters through our quarterly Transformations newsletter, which provides updates on our latest programs, strategic direction and stories about people who have turned their lives around thanks to their generosity.

We also offer regular communications with stakeholders via our website, which is updated daily with stories and media releases. Our media policies and vetting processes are designed to ensure that all Mission Australia announcements are timely and factual, do not omit material and are expressed in a clear and objective manner.

In recent years we have also developed our capacity to engage with our community on a daily basis via Facebook and Twitter. Our followers included donors, members, volunteers and people working in the community services sector and government.

Our Partnerships and Relationships managers also stay in regular contact with our corporate partners and trusts and foundations via email and through face-to-face meetings, and encourage our supporters to take part in site visits.

Our major supporters are also sent copies of the Mission Australia Annual Report, which is released on the day of our Annual General Meeting in November each year.

Mission Australia managers also regularly communicate via phone and email with government departments relevant to their area of operation. Additionally, we send members of Federal and State Parliaments printed copies of the reports published by our Research and Social Policy Unit, and make submissions to government on relevant issues.

At a local level, Mission Australia centres regularly host events and open days to engage and inform their communities about our work. When visiting our sites, members of the community are encouraged to take home printed copies of our annual reports, newsletters and fact sheets to learn more.

In 2010 Mission Australia released Our Strategy Towards 2020 – sent to 2,000 staff members and 3,000 external stakeholders. This document, which outlines the organisation’s vision for the next decade, is also available as a download on our website.
