Big Heart Op-Shop & Factory Seconds

Big Heart Op-Shop and Factory Seconds takes clothing, furniture and factory seconds donated by the community and businesses and sells them at low prices in Big Heart op shops and via its
eBay store.

This Mission Australia social enterprise annually diverts thousands of tonnes from landfill and provides accredited training, volunteering and employment opportunities to local people.

Big Heart was established in the Illawarra in 1991 to fund local Mission Australia youth services. It now includes eight op shops that offer high-quality, low-cost clothing and furnishings, and also sells goods online.

Money raised from the sale of these goods funds a range of Mission Australia community services that support disadvantaged families
and individuals.

This social enterprise offers accredited training in retail, warehouse operations and information technology (IT), providing long-term unemployed people with the skills to secure lasting work.

Big Heart also offers a diverse volunteer program that enables people from all walks of life to give back to their community, interact with others and gain work experience.

With a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, Big Heart makes use of all of the clothing and goods donated by the community and businesses – by recycling, reducing and re-using.

Big Heart’s base at Bellambi is now home to a range of enterprises that provide local jobs and training and reduce landfill. Among them is:

• Soft Landing - a mattress recycling operation
• Featherweight - which produces padded sports equipment from old mattress filling
• Bag of Rags - which involves cutting down unusable clothing and textiles into cleaning rags for industry.
