Communities for Children (C4C) provides support for children aged from birth to 12 years and their families who are vulnerable, at risk or in disadvantaged communities. Using early intervention and prevention strategies to facilitate positive early childhood development, C4C’s range of services aim to improve child development, child safety and family functioning.

  • Kids’ gym
  • Family Links (Community Hubs) in four local primary schools
  • Hook’d Up – a learning enrichment program for children aged six to 12
  • First Connections (promoting speech and language development)
  • Child-Friendly Communities Project
  • Mt Druitt Children Matter Project
  • Aboriginal Families Connect

Communities for Children (C4C) - Family Links

Family Links connects local families of children aged from birth to 12 with support, activities and information. The project aims to build strong connections and relationships within the local community, meet the needs of families and give children in the Mt Druitt area the best start in life.

The Family Links project targets three communities in the Mt Druitt area – Blackett, Hebersham and Whalan. It is designed for significantly disadvantaged communities and families, especially vulnerable and at-risk families and children.

The creation of four community hub spaces within local schools means that families can access information and support during school terms.

Information, referral and support are provided for families.

Children’s Champions Project

This project is part of the Child Friendly Communities Project. Funded by Housing NSW, it aims to engage local volunteers from four suburbs in the Mt Druitt area - including parents and carers, social housing residents, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds - to work together to identify how they can improve their suburbs and make them more supportive of local children and families.

Child-Friendly Communities Project

This project aims to build relationships between various community stakeholders, business operators and the community at large in order to advocate for child-friendly environments and work practices. Creating a child-friendly community includes the following activities:

  • The formation and facilitation of the Mt Druitt Child Friendly Communities Action Group
  • Supporting local groups to advocate for improved parks and open spaces and a more child-friendly environment in their suburb
  • Coordination and implementation of child-friendly community events
  • Capacity-building of local services to ensure their practices are child-friendly
  • Advocacy to ensure the views of children are included in decision-making and planning

Aboriginal Families Connect Project

This project connects Aboriginal families with each other and services. The expected outcomes of the project are:

  • Sustainable pathways into child and family services for Aboriginal families
  • Aboriginal families experiencing reduced barriers when accessing services
  • An increase in local Aboriginal families’ knowledge of, trust in, and likelihood of using services that increase their parenting capacity and support their children’s development
