The brightly coloured vans are manned by professional youth workers who provide relief for alcohol and drug-fuelled disorderly behaviour and support young people experiencing homelessness. These services aim to improve young people’s safety by diverting them from risky behaviour and crime, providing information and guidance, and connecting them with local community services. A key feature of the model is follow-up support with young people and their families. Youth Beat helps young people to successfully become strong, healthy adults who play active roles in the social, cultural and economic life of their communities. Youth Beat, SALaunched in 2011, this program works in partnership with SA Police, Street Outreach Services, Adelaide City Council and other key stakeholders. It links closely with Mission Australia’s youth-specific sobering-up service based at the Hindmarsh Centre. It works with young people aged from 12 to 24 at risk of or engaging in unsafe activities. Youth Beat Darwin and Palmerston, NTThis service provides youth outreach service to young people aged 10 to 18 on the streets of Darwin and its northern suburbs and the Palmerston CBD and surrounding suburbs. Hours of operation:
Youth Beat Katherine, NTThis service works with young people aged from 10 to 18 through targeted activities, conveying them to safety and helping to divert them from engaging in risky behaviours. Hours of operation:
Youth Beat Hobart, TASThis service is based at Mission Australia Centre - Chigwell House, in the northern suburbs of Hobart, which is one of the state’s most disadvantaged areas. Youth Beat provides support, information and referrals to services such as Youth Connections, Derwent Valley Flex and Targeted Youth Support Services. Hours of operation:
