Services for new arrivals and refugees (NSW)

Mission Australia delivers several services in Sydney and the surrounding Hunter and Illawarra regions that assist new arrivals, including refugees, to settle into the community and gain the skills to successfully carve out a new life.

These Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) services include:

Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
AMEP is the Australian Government's largest settlement program. Operated by the Navitas English Consortium across Sydney, this free program provides English language courses to eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants.

AMEP also aims to help students make friends and learn about Australia, its people and customs, and how to move into study and work.

Mission Australia’s role in the AMEP includes providing a counselling service to newly arrived migrants and refugees and advice on educational, vocational pathways and settlement information. Individual Pathway Guides (IPGs) are prepared for each new student to help plan for their future.

Eligible migrants may be referred to the AMEP by their sponsor, their settlement provider or Centrelink, or they can self-refer.

Humanitarian Settlement Services (HSS)

This DIAC-funded program is designed to help humanitarian entrants rebuild their lives in Australia. Through the HSS Volunteer Coordination Unit, Mission Australia recruits and trains volunteers to help entrants develop independence by connecting them to relevant government and community organisations.

Mission Australia operates HSS Volunteer Coordination Units in the Hunter and Illawarra regions.

Home Tutor Scheme and Enhancement Program: The Home Tutor Scheme is a personalised volunteer-driven program that assists newly arrived adult migrants and refugees to learn the basics of the English language. The service is provided to AMEP-eligible individuals by trained volunteer tutors at the student’s home.

The Enhancement Program provides support to community groups, such as churches and libraries, to set up and conduct conversation and English language classes for clients no longer eligible for the Home Tutor Scheme. Volunteer tutors are given free training and support by Mission Australia.

Mission Australia delivers the Home Tutor Scheme and educational counselling as part of The Navitas English AMEP Consortium - a partnership of organisations dedicated to assisting migrants and refugees to settle into the community.

LLNP is available to refugees and migrants, as well as native English-speaking job seekers who need extra support with their literacy and numeracy skills.
