Family and Friends, Alcohol and other Drugs, Community and Counselling, Education and Empowerment (FACE) (WA)

teen-relationships-160Mission Australia’s Family and Friends, Alcohol and other Drugs, Community and Counselling, Education and Empowerment  – or FACE – is an early intervention program that operates in the south-west of Western Australia.

It targets young people aged between 10 and 15 living with a main caregiver who misuses drugs and or alcohol.

Since 2011 FACE has been supported by Apache Energy as part of their commitment to improving the communities in which they operate.

FACE aims to prevent at-risk young people from developing harmful habits by adopting a proactive, collaborative, solution-focused approach. It offers advice, practical and emotional support, and encouragement achieved through drug and alcohol education, informal counselling and mentoring and referrals to other services.

The program also provides a school holiday program and recreational activities that build confidence and self-esteem.

Among these activities is Photovoice, an annual project that encourages young people to express themselves and share their world view through photography. The project culminates in an annual exhibition at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.

Given the success of the FACE program in the south-west, Mission Australia is seeking to replicate this service in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
