You can help give young Australians the chance of a future.

Spring appealWith no hope for the future and nowhere to go, *Jane dropped out of school, slept on the streets and met a group of kids who introduce her to drugs. While on the street Jane was referred to one of Mission Australia’s youth services. When Jane arrived at the service she finally felt like someone was reaching out to help her.

Slowly Jane started to rebuild her self-esteem and trust of others again. Now, she’s studying full time at TAFE and one day hopes to become a youth worker.

spring-appealWith no hope for the future and nowhere to go, Jane* dropped out of school and slept on the streets. Soon she met a group of other homeless kids who offered to take care of her. They also introduced her to drugs. Jane’s addiction to drugs became her coping mechanism to shut out the reality of her situation.

Each night she struggled to find somewhere safe to sleep. Just when Jane thought her life couldn’t get any worse, she ended up in hospital with a needle infection.

Tonight **21,940 young Australians – some just 12 years old – won’t have a place to call home.

Each night, ***50% of young people who seek a bed are turned away because the crisis accommodation services are full.  Many of them are likely to have left home to escape domestic violence, child abuse or family breakdown. Usually they have no idea what life on streets is really like. Finding a place to sleep is one of the many challenges young homeless people face. This leaves many young people with no option but to sleep on the streets. Often young people living on the streets will drop out of school as finding somewhere to sleep each night and something to eat becomes their priority.

Providing assistance, before homelessness becomes an issue,  is very effective in setting adolescents on the right path for their future. That’s why Mission Australia has set up 94 youth-targeted services aimed at transforming teenagers’ lives before they can come to too much harm.

Spring AppealWe believe that all young people should be given the opportunity to move through their adolescent years and into adulthood well prepared for life ahead.

With your help we can make this possible for the 21,940 young Australians who are homeless.
