Friends In Giving Society (FIGS) |
The fig leaf is traditionally associated with clothing and protection, which makes it the perfect symbol for one of Mission Australia’s most loyal supporters - Friends in Giving. Affectionately known as FIGS, the Friends in Giving Society was established back in 1987 by three female executives from Sydney who wanted to make a difference in their community. Inspired by an ABC documentary on street kids, they formed FIGS to support young people in need. They were joined by other friends, some of whom continue to serve on the committee. Over the years, FIGS has been a major supporter of Triple Care Farm – Mission Australia’s residential program in the Southern Highlands for young people experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness or acute behavioural problems. Every Spring since 1989 the society has organised the FIGS Gold Ball. Traditionally hosted at the Sydney Hilton Hotel. The Ball’s famous teddy bear auction is another highlight of the night. Because FIGS committee members generously absorb the administrative and overhead costs, all the money raised goes directly to the chosen Triple Care Farm project for that year. Funds raised by FIGS have greatly assisted Triple Care Farm’s development, including the building and expansion of the Figs Learning Centre and the renovation and extension of Gateway House - an accommodation building for new arrivals. Funds raised from the FIGS Gold Ball have also helped improve the education facilities at the Farm and have provided equipment and supplies for the training courses that enable students to gain skills and employment. They have also donated money for bikes, canoes, farm animals and have covered the cost of a professional therapist program, which enables young people who have experienced abuse and trauma to express and work through their experiences. FIGS recently came to the rescue again at Triple Care Farm, providing money for the renovation of its counselling building. They generously funded new paint, carpets, central heating and refurbished the kitchen and appliances.
