Half all youths in juvenile detention unsentenced: AIHW

juvenile-early-interventionAbout 1,000 young people are in juvenile detention on an average night in Australia and almost half have yet to be sentenced for a crime, according to a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The Juvenile Detention population in Australia 2011 report found that on an average night in the June quarter of 2011 there were 1,055 young people in detention, and 48 per cent who were unsentenced.

“Young people who are unsentenced are in custody because they are awaiting their next court appearance,” said AIHW spokesperson Nigel Harding.

Still time to be part of Reconciliation Through Dining

charcoal-laneThere’s still time to book a seat at Mission Australia’s Charcoal Lane Reconciliation Through Dining event, to be held on 10 March as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

Sitting at tables of 10, to promote conversation and connection, dinner guests will be served a five-course degustation menu matched with wines.

Local Aboriginal Elders have worked with Charcoal Lane staff to create a menu that will stimulate conversation among the 60 guests. Aboriginal community leaders will also host guests at tables of 10.

CEO CookOff goes down a treat!

CEO-Cookoff-160The 132 business chiefs who took part in last night’s inaugural CEO CookOff faced two challenges – feeding 1,000 people in Sydney’s Cathedral Square and supporting Australians in need.

In make-shift kitchens under threatening skies, they did both in spectacular fashion, raising well over $885,000 for Mission Australia and OzHarvest – and counting!

Among the chiefs who donned aprons last night were Alan Joyce of Qantas (which sponsored the event), National Rugby League CEO David Gallop, Therese Rein of Ingeus and Allens Arthur Robinson Chief Executive  Ewen Crouch – who is also Chairman of Mission Australia.

Report finds Reconciliation Action Plans get results

Young-man2-160A new report by Reconciliation Australia highlighting the achievements Australian workplaces are making towards reconciliation shows organisations with culturally safe environments are more likely to have sustainable outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Impact Measurement Report evaluates the collective impact of the RAP program and details the significant milestones made by the growing RAP community.

Together we can tackle housing shortage: MA Housing Chief

MA-Housing-Chief-Executive-Andrew-McAnulty-160MA Housing Chief Executive Andrew McAnulty writes in today’s Sydney Morning Herald that with a shortage of dwellings predicted to reach 600,000 by 2030, the time has come for large-scale co-operation.

According to the latest National Housing Supply Council State of Supply Report, Australia has a shortage of about 215,000 dwellings, which means there are many more households than homes.

“And with the greatest shortages among affordable purchase and rental options for households on low to moderate incomes and subsidised rental housing for low income earners,” writes Mr McAnulty, “it's the most vulnerable who are hurting most.
