How does your role make a difference?I provide advice and support to those who work directly with individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. Developing innovative ways of supporting people helps ensure that individuals and families are able to transform their experiences and achieve their potential in the long-term. What motivates you when the going gets tough? Remembering that life is so much more challenging for so many others. That helps to put my challenges into context and helps to overcome whatever barriers I am confronting. Sometimes it is simply about believing that what you are doing will make a difference for these people. What are the biggest challenges homeless people face? Having hope and seeing possibility when you are simply trying to survive. Staying safe is a very big challenge that takes up a lot of time for people who are homeless. The other major challenge is feeling valued by society with many people who are homeless feeling looked down on by the rest of the community. What do you like most about your job? Diversity and the opportunity to make a difference to people's lives. It is a real privilege to work alongside people who help to transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable Australians in our communities. I love to hear about people who have been able to rise above their day-to-day challenges and see new horizons for themselves. What's one of the proudest moments you've had at work? That's a hard question… probably the development of a service known as Michael's Intensive Supported Housing Accord (MISHA) that was funded by a generous donor. We worked together with people who had experienced homelessness and their support staff to develop MISHA, which is a 'housing-first' approach to homelessness. This service places homeless individuals into houses before offering them additional services they need like health services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and psychological counselling. The real moments of pride, however, come when we get to hear about the difference MISHA makes in people's lives and the incredible self-esteem that people feel when they are offered a place of their own.
