Youth Beat hits the streets of Adelaide

Youth Beat hits the streets of AdelaideMission Australia has launched its Youth Beat mobile support service in Adelaide in an effort to reach out to intoxicated, drug-affected or homeless young people on the city’s streets.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood and Mission Australia CEO Toby Hall officially unveiled the brightly coloured Youth Beat this morning at The Mercury Cinema.

This early intervention program will be manned by professional youth workers who will provide relief for the significant problem of alcohol and drug-fuelled disorderly behaviour on Adelaide’s streets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The service will also focus on youth homelessness.

South Australia Police statistics for 2009-10 show that excessive drinking accounted for 83.7 per cent of offences in Hindley Street, which is regarded as Adelaide’s epicentre of disorderly behaviour.

The Youth Beat service will fulfil what police and other agencies regard as a significant need for youth support in the CBD.

“This initiative will reduce pressure on police and others as Youth Beat staff have been trained to assess who requires medical attention and who needs to be escorted to a safe place to sober up,” said Mission Australia State Director Carol Hampton.

The Youth Beat program works in partnership with SA Police, Street Outreach programs, Adelaide City Council and other key stakeholders. It links closely with Mission Australia’s youth-specific sobering up service based at Hindmarsh Centre.

It is supported by Adelaide City Council and the Government of South Australia, with funding also provided by the community through initiatives such as FebFast.
This mobile street support service has also been operating in the Northern Territory and Tasmania for several years.
