During National Literacy and Numeracy Week, we’d like to highlight Mission Australia's Literacy, Language and Numeracy program, which is helping to break down barriers to employment and community participation. In Forbes and Parkes, in the Central West of New South Wales, this service is giving hope to local people who have fallen through the cracks in the education system. Since late last year, a small but growing group of Central West residents have attended free classes provided by Mission Australia. The classes aim to help students of all ages improve their reading, writing and numeracy skills. Mission Australia trainer Therese Buggy is a qualified language, literacy and numeracy teacher who currently offers classes every Monday and Tuesday. She told The Forbes Advocate last week that people attend the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program (LLNP) classes for various reasons – from wanting to improve their job prospects, help with current or future studies or simply better manage their lives. Anyone can attend – they just need to contact their job service provider and ask to be referred to the program. Ms Buggy said there is no limit to class sizes: “The more the merrier. Smaller classes allow us to give more individual attention and one-on-one time but the advantage of more students is we get to do more group work and there is more social interaction." Ms Buggy said a recent student provided a good example of where the classes can lead. "We recently had a young fellow who went on to do his School Certificate," she said. "He improved his confidence along with his literacy and numeracy." LLNP provides up to 800 hours of language, literacy and numeracy training. Courses are provided in 200 hour modules, with minimum attendance of 10 hours per week. The initiative is a Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) program that is available to eligible jobseekers who want to increase skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing and maths. The program is available through Mission Australia in New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
