Mission Australia Study Tour San Francisco, USA 19 – 23 September 2011 Welcome to a blog by Mission Australia’s Norman Holmes, Youth Financial Literacy Coordinator. Norman leads the Mission Australia team who deliver financial education in the community and facilitate training with partner community groups. Excited by the innovative and holistic financial empowerment programs based in San Francisco and thanks to the Citi Foundation, Norman will be visit San Francisco on a study gour and will visit six different community organisations delivering financial inclusion programs. Norman hopes to be able to use this experience to inform and shape the direction of financial education programs across Mission Australia. -------- Friday 16 September This study tour is such an amazing opportunity that has been provided to Mission Australia by the Citi Foundation, and it’s a huge privilege to be the person representing our organisation on this study tour. It is my hope that the learnings from this study tour can not only inform the practice of our financial inclusion programs but provide Mission Australia with insight into how we can make financial education and inclusion programs part of all of the services we offer to our both our clients and staff wherever we work with them. In December last year I attended the Citi-FT financial education summit: Mind over Money: Influencing Positive Financial Behaviour. Here I heard Ben Mangan, President and CEO of EARN in San Francisco speak outlining some of the programs his organisation is involved with. You can download a MP3 file of his talk from here. I was struck by the holistic nature of the services EARN provide and was particularly interested in the financial mentoring program they run. With the assistance of our contacts at Citi a teleconference was set up so that I could ask Ben some more detailed questions about this and the other programs EARN run with low income participants. That teleconference was a fantastic opportunity for information exchange and helped to inform our own piloting of financial mentoring, a program we are adding to our Citi-funded financial education program run in western Sydney. It was from that meeting that the idea of this study tour was born. During my time in San Francisco I will be visiting six different community organisations delivering financial inclusion programs, including financial education, matched savings programs, and financial mentoring covering participants of all ages. I am excited about being able to bring back a greater understanding of how these programs work and achieve outcomes for their participants. Stay tuned for updates direct from San Francisco.
