Norm's Blog: Day Three Part One - United Way Spark Point Oakland. |
| 22 September 2011 |
This morning’s site visit was some way out of San Francisco city so it involved my first experience of the amazing public transport system here. Cheap, clean, fast and super convenient - riding the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) was a great way to start to the day. The United Way Spark Point is a community hub that is attached to a public housing redevelopment in Oakland. I met with a group of great people who work for a number of different organisation but work as a team in the spark point centre with the goal of engaging members of the community in a number of the services they offer. Those services range from employment support through financial education, access to low-fee banking products, matched savings programs, tax help and community education. Pictured here is Lloyd Williams from the workforce collaborative who works as a career advocate in the program. It’s clear to see how a community can benefit from access to a community hub like this one that is part of the facility where they live and there are some great success stories that have come from the program. |
