Resolve to help at-risk Queenslanders stay housed

18 November 2011

Young-man-200Social housing tenants at risk of homelessness due to mental illness will get extra support to remain in secure accommodation thanks to a new Queensland Government initiative delivered by Mission Australia.

Up to 300 tenants in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast will benefit from Resolve, a two year early-intervention program that aims to provide immediate short-term support to at-risk tenants experiencing early symptoms of mental illness.

This week Disability Services Minister Curtis Pitt announced that Mission Australia will receive $720,000 through the Resolve initiative. “We know that social housing tenants experiencing early symptoms of mental ill health are at risk of losing their tenancy,” Mr Pitt said.

“That’s why we need to get in there early and give them the support they need to remain in safe and secure accommodation. This initiative is about preventing the downward spiral which can lead to homelessness and a life on the streets if mental illness goes untreated”.

Mission Australia State Director Penny Gillespie said the Resolve program will provide a much-needed support service for people who are struggling in the community.

“This program will allow us to help people with a mental illness before they are in crisis, so they can stay in a safe and stable housing environment and not end up on the streets,” Ms Gillespie said.

“Not only is this a good result for the individuals we will be able to assist, it is also a good result for the wider community as it reduces the strain on the public health system and homeless services in general.

“Many of the people who come to Mission Australia’s homeless services throughout Queensland have experienced or are experiencing mental health issues.

“So it makes sense to put a program in place that focuses on early intervention, to help people get through these challenges while maintaining their tenancy, rather than falling into the cycle of hospitalisation or homelessness.

“We’re very pleased to be delivering this new program which will provide support for people at a crucial time in their lives, so they don't fall through the cracks.”
