Melbourne Family Day at the Zoo a roaring success |

Now in its fourth year, the initiative provides a unique opportunity for disadvantaged children, migrants, refugees and their families to engage with other families while learning and having a fun day out at Melbourne Zoo. Among the 3,800 invited guests was Deneice – one of the star trainees at our Charcoal Lane restaurant in Fitzroy – who brought her two sons and niece (pictured eating ice-creams generously provided by Streets) as well as members of her extended family. Deneice and her kids were lucky enough to get the chance to go into the giraffe enclosure, and even made last night’s TV news feeding the lanky animals. Apart from meeting the animals, children tried their hands at creating their own bracelets and making sock puppets. They also were treated to performances by dancers from the Wurundjeri Council, who also gave the Welcome to Country, and AfroBeat – an African dancing and drumming group that invited the children to have a go at banging out rhythms on 40 drums. Victorian Rugby Union players also popped in to teach the children a few useful rugby skills. Mission Australia’s Victoria State Director, Emma Cassar, said disadvantage or other hardship has prevented most of the parents and children from ever having experienced a day out such as this. “Guests had a unique opportunity to experience all the magic and wonder of the zoo thanks to the generosity of Zoos Victoria,” Dr Cassar said. “These sorts of activities engage children and their families to build relationships and help build life skills. A visit to the zoo can be both an exciting and educational experience.” Mission Australia helps a large number of families overcome challenges that have prevented them from participating in community activities. Melbourne Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said that it is a pleasure to be able to provide such a special experience for these families. “Seeing the families interact and gaining new experiences through our zoo visit not only puts a smile on their faces but on the faces of our staff as well.” Thanks also to our volunteers and supporters from Accor, Axa, Qantas, Lend Lease and Middletons.
