What is the Catalyst Clemente Program?
Catalyst Clemente offers free socially supported university education in the humanities, delivered in a community setting for people who are experiencing significant life challenges.
The philosophy is that study in the humanities can empower people to develop an intellectual engagement with society, that encourages people to take action within their own lives.
The program offers accredited university courses over 12 weeks, in subjects such as literature, philosophy, sociology, media, journalism and art. Students completing four courses of study receive a university certificate, providing opportunities for further tertiary education.
Each student is supported by a Learning Partner, a volunteer who provides support and learning assistance throughout the course of study. Learning Partners are recruited from corporate partners and the wider community, and play a vital role in the program.
What is a ‘Learning Partner’?
As volunteers, Learning Partners support students through the process of learning, however are not necessarily ‘experts’ in the specific subjects undertaken. The Commitment of a learning partner varies according to the program in their state.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Providing support and academic assistance (e.g. help with organisational skills, library and internet research, essay writing, referencing, etc).
- Maintaining privacy, confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries.
- Interacting sensitively with people from different backgrounds, including those who may be experiencing issues such as homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, mental or physical health conditions, or social anxieties and exclusion.
What Learning Partners have said about their experience:
“The benefits of doing this are numerous for me: self awareness, experiencing greater compassion and connectedness with a part of our community from which we are often most separate.”
“I continue to gain insight into lifestyles, life experiences and circumstances of people I would otherwise never have the opportunity to understand or learn from. ”
“I am more optimistic about positive changes being possible in the world.
How is Catalyst Clemente delivered?
Catalyst Clemente is a unique program which is delivered in partnership by universities, community agencies, corporate partners, and members of the community. The program is delivered in a community setting rather than a university. This means it is more accessible to students and can cater for their particular needs of students by combining education with social support.
What students say about Catalyst Clemente:
"I have learnt so much through the course. Not just about the subject matter but my own capabilities."
"It has given me a new and different attitude towards education and myself."
"I am confident that I can set and obtain personal goals."
"This course is the best thing that has happened to me."
