Featherweight is a Mission Australia social enterprise based in Bellambi that produces padded sports equipment from old mattress filling and unwearable clothing donated to our Big Heart op shops.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Innovation Fund, which is a component of Job Services Australia, Featherweight aims to employ local job seekers who are Aboriginal or have a disability.
Trainees at Featherweight receive support to achieve accredited training in Certificate II in waste management. The social enterprise also provides vital work experience for local people who have been unemployed for long periods of time.
Featherweight uses a purpose-built and designed filling machine, which is believed to be the only one of its type. The finished products produced by Featherweight, including punching bags and goalpost pads, are packed off to Spartan Sports in nearby Warilla.
Launched in 2011, Featherweight is one of a growing number of Mission Australia social enterprises based in the Illawarra that aims to tackle the two issues of waste and local unemployment.
It particularly builds on the success of Soft Landing, which strips mattresses of all their useful, recyclable parts such as timber and metal.
