About our centre director, Leanne Peck:

Where did you come from?
I was born and raised in the Newcastle area. Where I attended primary school and high school. On completion of my high school certificate I then completed my diploma in children’s services. From here I worked across many of the childcare centres within the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Maitland area’s before gaining full time work in Moree. I did two and half wonderful years out at Moree before returning home to be closer to my family. I then did casual work for the family court before taking on the role as centre director here at Tanilba Bay and am loving the opportunity to work with some wonderful staff and beautiful families and their children.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Spending time filled with laughter, loving friends and family, and knowing that we make a difference in children’s lives each and everyday.

What do you feel is unique about your centre?
Our friendly and inviting atmosphere which our staff and families contribute to on a daily basis with out these our centre would not be what it is today.

What is your own early years learning philosophy?
That children learn best when given the chance to explore and develop at their own pace through role modelling and imagination. Children are our future therefore we need to lead and guide them to become capable young people with their own opinions and values.

What would you like to see your centre achieve in the next 5 years?
I would love to see our centre have a make over inside and out with our centre’s occupancy full at 38. Continue with our friendly atmosphere  and be able to offer places to under 2 year olds.

Tanilba Bay centre philosophy:

Mission Australia Early Learning Service Tanilba Bay believe that children learn most effectively in a secure, trusting, nurturing and stimulating environment that caters to the holistic child. This is based on parent and staff values working together to provide the best possible foundation for the growth of each child.

We recognise children's individual needs and its importance to encourage, support, plan and teach using a balance of active and quiet activities. We utilise both indoor and outdoor settings and provide a flexible daily routine. We respect individuality, diverse values and individual needs of the children, families and wider community.

We promote active participation in individual, small and large group play, in a variety of structured and flexible experiences. Our program is also based on choices, interests, and is considerate of different learning styles, while keeping to the guidelines of the Early Years Learning Framework. Our curriculum borrows from the practises of Reggio Emilia,

We actively support parents in their role as primary caregivers and encourage them to share and participate in the centre. These can be through notes or suggestions, sharing a skill, visiting the children, our day book, or verbal open communication.

We respect each family's background and strive to be inclusive of their diverse abilities both social and cultural, and incorporate these into opportunities for sharing and learning through presentation of relevant cultural activities and family involvement.

We believe that as staff we need to be aware of our importance as role models. We strive to maintain the highest quality of care by complying with regulations and policies, attending professional development opportunities and regular meetings to appraise and evaluate our own practices.

This ensures our centre objectives are being met and we are building enriching and trusting relationships that cater to the individuality, confidence and self-esteem of each child, family and community member thus making them feel accepted and valued.

We believe that early childhood is the foundation for establishing a life-long love of learning and acknowledge the value of play. It is about fun, celebration, exploration, discovery and the introduction of new ideas and possibilities that provoke thought and imagination and foster positive attitudes.

We value the needs and rights of each child and their abilities to make choices and develop independence. Children are capable and active contributors to their own and others learning. This establishes feelings of self worth in each child.

Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.
