About our centre director, Gwen Tuckwell:

Where did you come from?
I was born in British Columbia, Canada and came to Australia when I was a year old when my parents relocated to Australia as my Dad's side of the family are from Australia. As a young child we visited Canada often to see my Mom's side of the family.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?
As I have 3 young children they usually get me out of bed in the morning, I love playing with my kids and watching them grow and develop into the unique individuals they are :

What do you feel is unique about your centre?
As we are a very small centre we pride ourselves on being able to create an extended family, a home away from home as we call it. The staff have established close relationships with the children and the parents as well as some of the grandparents, which does not always occur at larger centres. A lot of our families have been referred to our centre from friends or families who attend the centre.

What is your own early years learning philosophy?
I believe that children learn best in environments where they are supported and nurtured by all who are in contact with the individuals.

I believe that staff and individuals should respect each child's right to participate in learning experiences and that I will strives to provide an atmosphere that is caring, friendly and where each individual is nurtured and shaped by the values which they hold dear. I believe that all children should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential and to develop a passion for life and for learning.

Redwood Park centre philosophy:

We believe that early childhood is a crucial time in the development of each individual. For this reason we will work in partnership with children and their families to ensure the best possible start in life.

We provide a nurturing environment where each child has the opportunity to learn within the context of caring relationships with carers. Our educators will establish and foster learning partnerships with children and their parents.

We will provide a learning environment that is safe, secure and well maintained. Our environment is inclusive and reflects value and respect for the diversity of children's backgrounds and the communities in which they live.

Our learning framework will be based on best practice and principles of accountability. We will collaborate with children, their families and the community to plan, develop, implement and continually improve a high quality curriculum.

We recognise and promote play based learning in which children are able to express their ideas and engage in exploration, imagination, experimentation and creativity.

We recognise that each child's learning pathway takes place within the context of their family and community. For this reason we will promote partnerships with parents and community services in an integrated service model that ensures families are supported to meet the needs of their children.
