Intern Placement – Alexis Bradshaw Creative Youth Initiatives “Are you creative?” I can’t say I expected to hear this question from the Social Work Field Education Officer at my uni. “Um….I played saxophone and piano at school….” I replied in the hope that I was able to sell myself for the placement whilst also letting her know that I really had no idea about the creative side of life. I was offered a field education placement at Mission Australia’s Creative Youth Initiatives under the directive of the Student Support Co-ordinator Sera Harris. At first I had no idea about what Mission Australia did besides being a welfare agency. After a short while I realised that Mission Australia was a massive organisation that had its fingers in most areas of society’s pie. I commenced my field education placement in August 2005 and I worked full time until the end of November 2005. I can’t say that working for free was a major highlight of my field education placement but I can honestly say that completing a placement with Mission Australia has made an indelible impact on my career as both a social worker and as a worker in general. Although my placement was in the youth sector of Mission Australia, the interactive nature of Mission Australia services across all sectors meant that I was able to get a deeper and broader understanding of how Mission Australia is attempting to catch all people who have slipped or are slipping through the gaps in society. Following the successful completion of my field education placement at CYI I was employed on a casual basis as the Student Support Project Worker which allowed me to further cement my knowledge of working in the youth sector and also within an organisation as diverse as Mission Australia. When the position of Student Support Co-ordinator became available as a maternity relief position, I was successful in my application for the role and this is where I have been since. In total I have been at Mission Australia for over two years and I don’t have any doubt that I have developed professional and personally from working in an organisation and with people that truly understand and encourage the importance of a well rounded field education placement.
