Graduate Success - Diana Nicholson

Tuesday, 18 March 2008 20:44

Graduate Trainee Testimony – Diana Nicholson, HR Administrator National Office

In 2007 I was involved in the inaugural Mission Australia Graduate Program. Having completed a degree in Commerce majoring in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations I had a strong interest in Human Resources and gaining a position in this area. However, I was also interested in working in the not-for-profit sector and seeing how my education and experience could be utilised in this industry.

The Graduate Program involved a number of short-term rotations through the various departments of Mission Australia’s National Office allowing me to gain an understanding of the wider organisation and become involved in a number of team and individual projects. This was followed by a longer-term placement at a homeless men’s accommodation service in Western Sydney. I was able to work with a team of very experienced staff who were happy to share their knowledge and insight into the issues and barriers faced by homeless men. Their welcoming attitude made me feel a part of the team and gave me a sense of making a difference in the lives of others. The ability to work with the homeless men was also a huge eye opener and an experience I am grateful to have had.

Whilst participating in the Graduate Program I was able to apply for permanent positions in the organisation. I was successful in gaining a position in the Human Resources team where I am now able to utilise my experience from the Graduate Program in my everyday work. The support provided by the Graduate Program Coordinator, my mentor as well as the team at Western Sydney Support Services assisted greatly in my development as a Graduate and my transition into a permanent role in the area of my choice at Mission Australia.
