Horticultural skills for young at Perth’s City Farm |

Media coverage - Guardian Express, 23 August 2011Young people will get hands-on experience at City Farm in East Perth as part of new government initiatives to train them in environmental and horticultural skills. Mission Australia, Job Futures and Now Green launched the National Green Jobs Corps horticulture program, which includes looking at water use and solar panel efficiency, last Monday at the site. Other youth development programs include North of Perth Bushland Regeneration and Perth’s City Conservation Youth Project. Mission Australia program consultant Kristina Hayley said the six-month programs for 17 to 24-year-olds were designed to educate people with skills that benefited both the environment and the community. “Each offers a wide range of work experience from regenerating and replanting degraded bushland, growing vegetables and native species to all aspects of plant propagation, small construction projects and weed eradication,” she said. Students will earn a certification in their studied field after the course is completed. Above picture: National Green Jobs Corps participant Justine Walsh. Photo courtesy of Mark Whisson.
