Media coverage - St Mary's Star, 23 August 2011Steps to make Mt Druitt more child-friendly will begin next Tuesday, August 30. Mission Australia's Mt Druitt Communities for Children invites families to put on their thinking caps and bring ideas to a forum at Wests Tradies, from 9am to 4pm. Simple steps such as clean, safe open spaces to play make a difference to neighbourhoods, said Mt Druitt Communities for Children manager Angela Power. "It's important to have child-friendly communities," she said. "There's evidence a safe and friendly environment for kids leads to better educational and social outcomes. "People will get increased skills and knowledge as a way forward for improved child-friendly neighbourhoods. "It also recognises children's roles as future planners." She's already working with Housing NSW-funded Children's Champion committees in Willmot, Shalvey and Bidwill. Forum speakers include UWS early childhood professor Karen Malone and Jim Diers from the University of Washington. "We wanted to take advantage of Jim's visit to Australia as the community will benefit from his vast experience working to improve neighbourhoods around the world," Ms Power said. The forum includes lunch and is free for community members. Wests Tradies (formerly Mt Druitt Workers) is on Woodstock Avenue, Dharruk. For more details call (02) 9832 9754.
