Mission Australia is launching a unique early intervention program at its Early Learning Centre at Elizabeth Vale today – providing support to parents within the family home as well as at the centre.

‘Playford Secure Families’ is an innovative program to provide children with high-quality early learning as well as offering parents help on the home front.

Mission Australia – one of Australia’s leading community service organizations – is working with other services in the Playford area to ensure early intervention facilities deliver exactly what families need.

“Playford Secure Families empowers parents and children to build skills and parenting capacity from the centre to the home,” said Carol Hampton, State Director of Community Services.

“The program builds positive family routines and enables optimum growth and learning. It is based on our strong belief that – with support and information - every parent can give their child a safe and happy home,” said Ms Hampton.

The three tier program includes a free weekly playgroup, confidential support and volunteer in-home support.

“The volunteer in-home support is what makes this program extremely special. We are very excited to welcome aboard our first group of volunteers who will play a supporting role in increasing family functioning and providing assistance through the most stressful times of the day,” said Ms Hampton.

Each volunteer will receive training and guidance throughout the process and provide practical and confidential in-home support to a carefully matched family.

Volunteers work alongside families as a parent mentor and will assist in promoting bonding and attachment, positive behaviour guidance, language and literacy development, and a general healthy lifestyle.

The first group of volunteers will commence home visits shortly, providing parent mentoring services for 2 to 10 hours per week.

“Each volunteer – whether younger or older - brings with them a range of prior skills, knowledge and personal experiences that can be used to support others,” said Ms Hampton.

“The program has attracted people who have worked with children and families in previous roles, are parents themselves or simply have a skill set that we can match to a family in need.

“We are actively seeking more volunteers at the moment and we encourage anyone who is looking for a unique way to give back to the community to give us a call to discuss the program.

“I think it is one thing to have professionals supporting families – which can bring about dramatic change - but volunteers can build valuable relationships with our clients from an entirely different perspective.

“Everyone has the capacity to support or improve the life of another person – and this is an excellent way for them to do this,” she said.

Toby Hall, Chief Executive Officer of Mission Australia, will officially launch Playford Secure Families at the Elizabeth Vale Early Learning Centre on Friday 9 September at 3pm.
