Our CEO Toby Hall recently spoke to Kristopher Halliday and Gen Peterson on Just Salvos TV about social justice, community transformation and social housing.

During his 15-minute interview, Toby talked about Mission Australia’s focus of providing a hand up and not a hand out, and the need for sustained support when working with disadvantaged communities.

“We’re about change,” he said. “It’s so not about giving someone shelter for the night, it’s about housing for life. It’s not about ‘we give you some money to sustain yourself’ - it’s about getting them into employment.“You have to journey with people, but when it changes it is outstanding. When kids see dad or mum working their self-esteem raises…

“Poverty is quite isolated in Australia,” he added. “Fourteen postcodes represent most of the poverty in Australia. And most of us don’t go to those places. When you fail to educate people, you take away their opportunities for life…

“Our focus at Mission Australia is we need to start really, really young. We start with our three-year olds, particularly in disadvantaged communities, and give them the right start so they can commute with world around them, they can learn and they can deal with the challenges which will face them as they go through education.

“Over time you can create transformation in communities,” he said, adding that when communities such as Harlem in New York focused on local education, things started to change for the better – “But you need sustained, continued effort to make the change.”

Mr Hall also said that the lack of affordable housing is a major issue across Australia – and the “not in my backyard syndrome” was not helping.

“People getting locked out are the most disadvantaged and poor, those at the bottom of the pile economically,” he said. “People don’t want this in their backyard – and we’ve got to stop saying that. We’ve got to put our hand up and say that’s what justice is about and accept it and stop the ‘not in my backyard’ syndrome…

“We miss out in the joy of life when we lock people into these communities. We miss out on the richness of life.”
