Mission Australia: tragedy if housing element of stimulus package not passed

06 Feb 2009
blog-money-houseMission Australia has called for a quick resolution of the Senate vote allowing for the passage of the Rudd Government’s economic stimulus package and its investment in social housing saying it would be a tragedy for low-income Australians to miss out.

After attending a briefing between the Prime Minister, Ministers and leading welfare groups in Canberra today, Mission Australia’s CEO, Toby Hall, said the package’s commitment to building 20,000 new homes for social housing would make an enormous contribution to the government’s aim of halving homelessness by 2020.

“One of the major reasons homelessness is such an issue in Australia today is because we’ve let our social housing stocks run so low,” said Mr Hall.

“You can introduce as many homeless programs and interventions as you like, but if it’s not backed up with adequate affordable housing then it’s almost useless.
“Mission Australia’s submission to the government’s recent White Paper on homelessness was absolutely clear on the need to boost affordable and social housing – and the measures contained in the economic stimulus package do just that.

“Through this investment we stand a really strong chance of meeting the government’s goal of halving homelessness by 2020. It will provide an unprecedented shot in the arm for the social housing sector.”

Mr Hall said he also hoped that the package’s initiative to insulate 2.7 million homes could also be partly aimed at labour market transition program’s like Mission Australia’s Urban Renewal in Melbourne. The program makes low-income households energy- and water-efficient at the same time as providing work and training to long-tern unemployed young people.

“Through Urban Renewal’s costings we can insulate households at a cheaper rate than most private contractors while also giving crucial employment and training opportunities to disengaged young people. It’s been an enormous success.

“I strongly encourage the minor parties and the Opposition to consider the social housing aspects of this package and to let them pass.”
