Mrs Joanna Gash MP, Member for Gilmore, will officially open Mission Australia’s newest Big Heart Enterprises store in Nowra at a ceremony at 11am on Friday 13 February. The new store is Mission Australia’s fifth in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven and will be a source of affordable clothing, homewares and second hand furniture for Nowra locals. With every purchase customers will also help fund some of Mission Australia’s many community services including a Nowra program to support grandparents who have custody of their grandchildren. “There are many people in and around Nowra who are already suffering financially either as a result of the recent economic turmoil or more sustained issues including prolonged periods of unemployment,” said Andrew Douglas, Service Manager for Big Heart Enterprises. “The new store will give people an option to buy cheap, good quality clothing and homewares and make it just a little easier to balance the budget. “In many cases the things we sell are factory seconds or surplus stock from department stores so there are some real bargains. We’ve had $500 suits and brand new computers come in with the most minor of faults and we often sell them for a quarter or less of the retail price. “The money we do make will also help fund other vital Mission Australia services to assist people who are homeless, have drug or alcohol dependencies, and to get young people who have dropped out of school to reconnect with education and training to give them a better shot at having a decent job and fulfilling adult life.” Thanks to shared premises with J2S, a registered training organisation (RTO), Mission Australia is also providing the added community benefit of giving on-the-job training to local students and Work-For-Dole (WFD) participants. Trainees will have the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications in industries including warehousing, upholstery, retail and administration. “The store’s on-the-job training will play an important role in building capacity in Nowra’s local community. It will also help build the students and work-for-the dole participants skills and experience to improve their long term job prospects,” said Bill Dibley, Southern NSW/ACT Community Services Operations Manager for Mission Australia.
