Australia’s biggest fundraising event to tackle homelessness – Hush for Homelessness – will be launched with a half-day series of events in Sydney’s Martin Place on Thursday, 23 April.Kicking off with a live outside broadcast by Hope 103.2’s breakfast hosts, Aaron and Dan, at 6am, the morning will culminate with a lunch time concert at 12noon featuring the Honeybees Choir and a performance by Mark Gable (Choirboys) with students from Mission Australia’s Sounds of the Street youth music program. Hush for Homelessness – which takes place on Friday, 15 May – raises money by asking participants to not speak for an hour, or more, and seek sponsorship from family and friends for their efforts. Homeless people not only feel marginalised, they feel voiceless. Hush for Homelessness encourages office workers, schools kids and community groups to experience what it’s like to be in a homeless person’s shoes – to be voiceless – by not speaking. All money raised will go to Mission Australia’s services providing crisis care, transitional or medium-term accommodation and essential support for homeless men, women and children. Mission Australia’s CEO, Toby Hall, encouraged people in Sydney’s CBD to drop down to Martin Place during their lunch hour to enjoy the concert and find out more about Hush for Homelessness. “I know when I offered to take part in Hush for Homelessness last year I was inundated with staff sponsoring me to keep quiet – and I’m confident I’ll get a similar response this year,” Toby joked. Australian celebrities – such as Catriona Rowntree and Jono Coleman – are also taking part and you can sponsor their silence by visiting the Hush website. “This isn’t the first time I’ve been asked to ‘zip it’ – but it is for the best cause. I will Hush for Homelessness for the 105,000 Australians without a home. Sponsor me to keep quiet for an hour and give homeless Aussies a voice,” said Catriona. “My whole career has been made from talking on the radio and TV. It was far too big a challenge for me not to get involved in this event. Not speaking for an hour is hard but not impossible. I encourage everyone to participate in Hush for Homelessness on 15 May,” said Jono Coleman.
