Mission Australia’s Communities for Children Mt Druitt invited families in the western Sydney region to attend an interactive parenting expo at Anglicare last Tuesday, 28th April, to help promote the importance of early learning in children aged 0-5.The event, “Growing Bodies, Growing Minds”, provided free information and entertainment for families and children in the region, and featured a guest appearance by Jay Laga’aia, from the popular children’s show 'Playschool', who talked about his experiences being a dad. Organised by Mission Australia’s Communities for Children Mt Druitt, parents were able to talk to service providers and other parents in a fun and positive atmosphere, and gain information on how to encourage early learning in children aged 0-5. Mission Australia’s Communities for Children Blacktown (Mt Druitt) Service Manager, Angela Power, said prior to the event that it would help increase parents’ awareness of local services and activities, as well as help promote the importance of the early years for a child’s future development. “The initiative responds to a need in the community to promote how important parents are in their children’s lives and how they can support their young children’s development,” Ms Power said. “We want to encourage a very supportive and interactive atmosphere where parents will feel comfortable to share information and experiences with each other. “We hope this event helps to increase parent’s awareness of local services and activities they can participate in with their children, and help them understand the importance of leading a happy and healthy lifestyle.” A range of free activities was planned for the kids at the event, as well as a free sausage sizzle, raffle prize draw, expo of local services and entertainment. Ms Power said the event gave parents the opportunity to talk to one another, and share their experiences and advice. “Parenting is a difficult job and we can all use a little support and information from time to time to help us give our children the best start to life that we can provide,” Ms Power said. “We want people to know that help is available and help them to have the power to build positive experiences with their children to ensure they grow into positive adults.” For more information about Communities for Children Mt Druitt, please phone 02 9832 8943.
