Story on live music scene in Adelaide’s south

It’s proof you’re never too old to rock – or at least to appreciate the importance of a vibrant live music scene in Adelaide.

Three local ‘oldies’ have been playing a huge role in supporting Stage Against the Machine Showcase – a major biannual youth music event to be staged on Friday, June 16 by Mission Australia’s Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre, in partnership with the City of Onkaparinga.

The event – aimed at re-establishing live music in Adelaide’s south – will this Friday feature dynamic live performances by eight outstanding young bands from the local area and is expected to again attract a full house of 200–plus music fans.

Local dad Chris Fry has literally helped to stage the showcase event. With two sons Brad and Langley in local rock band Black Knight, he’s spent hours rebuilding and extending the stage for the event, including installing a drum riser with full lighting effects.

Two other ‘seniors’ – local businessmen Alan Jackson and Kevin Carr from Blue Lung Productions have also stepped up to the mark. They rehearse their own rock band, LT, at the centre and, in return, provide free PA and lights, and other equipment to record, mix and master each band’s recording, so they can go away with a CD and DVD of their live performances.

“We’ve just been so thrilled by the support from Chris, Alan and Kevin,” said Mission Australia’s Jo Murray. “We really couldn’t do the Showcase on the size and scope that we do without their commitment and I’ve lost count of the hours they’ve spent here helping out,” she said.

Friday’s event will feature music for all tastes, including the huge sounds of Big Mistake, Destruction Overdrive, LT and Yorke Peninsula rock outfit Something for the Pain, plus local favourites Black Knight and The Kicks, and newcomers Anti-Radio.

It will be staged on Friday, June 16th, from 5.30pm at Mission Australia’s Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre at 10 Main South Road Reynella, just behind Fasta Pasta.

Please note: Chris Fry, Alan Jackson and Kevin Carr will be available for interviews and photos with band members during setup and sound-checks on Friday, from 1pm.
