Mission Australia in conjunction with the Salvation Army Employment Plus, the Migrant Resource Centre and TAFE Tasmania is today holding an information expo for newly arrived Australians to assist them to identify training and employment options.

Mission Australia State Operations Manager Noel Mundy said the Pathways to Employment Expo is aimed at providing newly arrived Australians with the correct information to navigate the complex path towards training and employment in Tasmania.

“Mission Australia has a number of services available to newly arrived Australians seeking employment including the Language, Literacy & Numeracy Programme (LLNP), Personal Support Programme (PSP), Community Work Coordinator (CWC), Work for the Dole (WFD) and Jobs, Placement Employment and Training (JPET),” Mr Mundy said.

“Mission Australia recognises that for many people new to Australia, successfully settling into their new home and community is made difficult by a number of factors, including language barriers and cultural differences.

“We hope this Expo not only assists those newly arrived to become aware of the myriad of job opportunities which exist, but to also remove some of the misconceptions which the business community may hold in employing newly arrived Australians.

“While some of these job seekers may come for backgrounds where employment and educational systems are poor, services such as those that Mission Australia provides are there to support them find training and employment in Tasmania as well as assist them during the first phases of their employment.”

In Tasmania, Mission Australia invests in people and communities in need, for the long term. Our strategy is to provide long term, sustainable programs that help job seekers into work and provide employers with quality trained staff. We work with communities across the State to assist in building resilience and equip individuals to play active roles in their communities.

The Pathways for Newly Arrived Australians Expo is being held today (Thursday, 1 March) from 10am -2pm at the Wellington Square TAFE campus. Launceston Mayor Ivan Dean will officially open the Expo at 10.30am.
