A group of enthusiastic local volunteers is busy at work restoring the Kapunda Copper Mine site and cleaning up the Freeling Wetlands under a special heritage and conservation project being run by Mission Australia, in partnership with the Light Regional Council. The Green Corp project, which is set to be officially launched today - Wednesday, April 11 at 2pm - by Member for Wakefield David Fawcett, will give a new lease of life to the site, a South Australian landmark and major tourist and community attraction. Participants in the project have also chosen, as their community venture, to breathe new life also into the Freeling Wetlands, a valuable local environmental resource. Mission Australia’s State Manager Mark Herselman said the 26 week program involves ten local participants aged from 17-20 years, who will learn important skills in a range of fields – horticulture, masonry, planning and design - to assist their future job prospects. “It’s a very positive project for the community – helping to preserve and protect the history of the mine site and to clean up a local resource like the Freeling Wetlands, as well as providing valuable training for young people in the area,” he said. Media are welcome to attend the official launch of the Historic Kapunda Copper Mine Site Project at the Light Regional Council Chambers, Main Street, Kapunda. For more information, please contact:
