Since September 2007, Mission Australia’s Youth Beat program has helped over 9000 young Tasmanians in the Glenorchy area with a wide range of concerning issues.

Mission Australia’s State Director Noel Mundy said the Youth Beat program, which sees on average around 300-350 young people each weekend, is a mobile after hours outreach van providing support, referrals and information to the young people of Glenorchy.

“Mission Australia has found the main issues concerning these young people range from homelessness, education and employment to general and sexual health, family breakdowns and hygiene,” Mr Mundy said.

“The reason for their engagement with the Youth Beat program runs through a number of categories including crisis, support, need, intervention, conversation, friendship and safety.

“The ages of the young people we assist range from 12-24 years, however we also assist families and friends who do not fit into this age bracket.

“Alarmingly the youngest person requiring assistance was only eight years old and the oldest so far was 78 years old.”

Mr Mundy said the program is provided free-of-charge and includes a private interview space inside the van for intervention counselling, information and referral.

“The Youth Beat program is operated by two youth workers who provide an after hours service on Friday and Saturday evenings as well as during the day on the weekends, with follow up referrals occurring on Mondays and Tuesdays,” he said.

“Youth Beat Glenorchy also attends most community events, major sporting days, education days and drug and alcohol workshops.

“Through activity based engagement Mission Australia aims to link young people to family, education, community and recreation within Glenorchy.

“Since its launch over six months ago, the Youth Beat van has built a strong presence in and around the Glenorchy municipality.

“While we provide high level crisis support and referrals, you never know how much just one conversation or a wave hello does for someone.”

Mission Australia helps disadvantaged Tasmanians regain their lives and independence by providing employment and training as well as offering youth initiatives to inspire disadvantaged young people.
