Art program helps young Tasmanians stay connected

A group of students from southern Tasmanian schools today graduated from Mission Australia’s inaugural Youth Arts Program (YAP) for disadvantaged youth.

Tasmanian State Operations Manager Noel Mundy said the program had a very positive impact on the students, providing them with a creative way to develop their talents, with one student even securing employment.

“A community sporting mural, improved school results and employment were just some of the positive outcomes from the program, supported by the Vodafone Australia Foundation,” Mr Mundy said.

“The students attended the course over a period of 12 weeks and were taught airbrushing, mural and illustration skills by local Tasmanian artist Robi Adams."

“Graduates today unveiled the community mural which they designed and painted, depicting sporting themes, on a wall at the Bellerive PCYC.”

Mr Mundy said the program gave the young students who previously didn’t have a voice, a way to communicate their thoughts and feelings through a creative outlet.

“The program also assisted the students in rebuilding their self-esteem and confidence and reconnecting them to the Tasmanian community in a positive way,” he said.

The YAP program was possible thanks to the generous support of the Vodafone Australia Foundation and assistance from Vodafone staff. Vodafone Australia Foundation Director Tim Hunt said the organisation was pleased to be a supporter of YAP, as it was a creative and fun way of empowering young Tasmanians.

“It’s important our young people have a voice and an outlet through which they can express their concerns,” Mr Hunt said.

“Programs such as these, provide young people with the skills, whether artistic or life skills, to forge ahead in life and achieve their dreams.”

Mission Australia helps disadvantaged Tasmanians regain their lives and independence by providing employment and training as well as youth initiatives to inspire disadvantaged youths.

Mission Australia has almost 280 services across every state and territory in Australia and five offices in Tasmania in Burnie, Launceston, Hobart, Moonah and Devonport.
