Mission Australia to combat unemployment in Meekatharra

16-01-2007

Mission Australia recently opened a remote servicing area in Meekatharra, which offers a variety of job network services for registered job seekers from Mt Magnet to Wiluna.

As a former Mission Australia client herself, the organisation’s Meekatharra services manager Sue Herbert believes the new office will make a difference to individuals - and the wider community - through matching willing employees to prospective jobs.

“Mission Australia recognised the need to provide employment services to people living in remote areas like Meekatharra and we’re pleased the office is now up and running,” Ms Herbert said.

“Mission Australia is calling for employers to utilise our services as an accredited recruitment agency,” Ms Herbert said.

"Through our Job Network, we are able to provide suitable applicants at no cost to the employer, and offer them free advertising for job vacancies they may have through Mission Australia's national database. It is through this network that Mission Australia helps to provide sustainable and enjoyable working relationships.”

The Meekatharra office also offers a variety of other services including Job Placement, Employment and Training (JPET) and a Personal Support Program (PSP), which assists people in overcoming multiple barriers that prevent them from gaining employment.

“Our JPET program provides young people aged 15 to 21 with access to education and training opportunities, which can lead to positive outcomes such as long-term housing, education and social reintegration,” Ms Herbert said.

“The Meekatharra office also uses Community Work Coordinators to secure placements with not-for-profit organisations that offer Work for the Dole projects.”

Mission Australia is one of WA’s largest community services organisations. Mission Australia is a Registered Training Organisation and provides employment services for employers and job seekers. Job seekers must be registered with Centrelink.

The Meekatharra office is open from Tuesday to Thursday, with outreach to surrounding towns on Monday and Friday. For more information on the services offered, visit www.missionaustralia.com.au or contact the Meekatharra office on 08 9981 1436.
