Musings into minds of at-risk young people

15-02-2007

Mission Australia suggests that government policy makers and community agencies should listen to a new CD by at-risk young people to help them better understand this group.

A new CD by 19 at-risk young people – launched in Sydney – tackles serious issues such as family breakdowns, drug and alcohol addiction and disenchantment with mainstream society.

Musings features music by young talented songwriters and musicians enrolled in the Sounds of the Street course at Mission Australia’s Creative Youth Initiatives (CYI) service.

CYI helps young people, aged 16-25, who are facing challenges such as mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, family breakdowns or are at risk of homelessness. The program helps students build self-esteem, improve communication skills, encounter positive learning experiences and gain educational qualifications in music.

CYI’s Manager, Evelyne Tadros, said that songs on Musings express the thoughts and feelings of young people who do not often get heard.

“Community agencies and government policy makers in particular, should listen to this CD as a way of understanding young people and help them develop effective policies and services that concern this important group in society,” she said.

“There are quite a few music styles in this album including rock, folk, pop and punk but each song has lyrics and messages that are brave and confronting. Our students use their music to explore their personal issues.

“The creative arts, such as music, can help young people express themselves in a positive way,” Ms Tadros said.
