A major Green Corps rehabilitation project is being launched for the Mt Crawford Forest region in the Adelaide Hills by leading community services group, Mission Australia, in partnership with ForestrySA.

Mission Australia’s State Director Mark Herselman said the project would recruit ten young people aged 17-20 years to work together for six months to help establish biodiversity corridors and low impact visitor facilities in the Cudlee Creek Native Forest Region.

“The area is a unique environmental, educational and recreational resource for South Australians and visitors to our State,” Mr Herselman said. “The Cudlee Creek and Mt Crawford Green Corp project will deliver very important community benefits, plus valuable training in a range of job skills for young people.”

As part of the 26 week project, expected to begin this month, the Green Corps team will:

• spread mulch in the Chalks Creek enclosures
• remove weeds in the Chalks Creek Revegetation area.
• install rabbit wire at the base of kangaroo enclosures
• audit and maintain trails in Mt Crawford and Cudlee Creek
• remove fence posts and bollards in Fromms Farm
• Install iron bark fencing at Fromms Farm and the Old School House at Mt Crawford
• repair fencing
• plant tube stock in the Thomas Hill herbarium at Mt Crawford
• undertake surveys of the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot

Green Corps is an Australian Government youth development and environmental training program. It provides young people with the opportunity to volunteer their time and effort to conserve, preserve and restore Australia’s natural environment and cultural heritage.

Participants receive a training allowance, uniforms, safety equipment and nationally accredited training (modules from Certificate II in Horticulture, Senior First Aid Certificate) in return for their commitment.

“We’re expecting strong interest from young people wanting to be involved in the project,” Mr Herselman said.

Mission Australia is currently managing a range of Green Corps projects across the State, including at Mt Gambier, Kapunda, Noarlunga, Normanville, Gumeracha and Murray Bridge.
