Mission Australia supports local music in the south

PDF Print E-mail
23 Sep 2008
blog-guitarThe best live bands in the southern suburbs will compete against each other in the Battle of the Bands staged by Mission Australia’s Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre (REYC) over the October long weekend.

Mission Australia’s Onkaparinga Youth Services service manager Kerrie Sellen says 24 bands are expected to contest heats on the Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend – 3 and 4 October – with a final four reaching finals on Monday, 5 October... The winner will receive cash, prizes and, says Ms Sellen, “highly sought-after MySpace bragging rights”.

Ms Sellen says Mission Australia, in partnership with the City of Onkaparinga, had supported the presentation of original live music at REYC with monthly ‘Stage Against the Machine’ (SATM) gigs for five years.

“The gigs have gone from strength to strength, growing from what was an ‘open mic’ night into a quality performance opportunity for locals to show their performing and writing talents.

“Mission Australia is committed to trying to help young people reach their full potential and realise their dreams and goals,” Ms Sellen says.

She says music has been shown to provide a means of establishing a rapport with young people.

“By supporting their music we can show that we’re willing to help young people in the ways that are important to them,” she says.  “Some of the bands that have come through the SATM gigs now have an established fan base in the south, and their members really feel proud of what they’ve achieved.”

One such band is melodic rock outfit Trinity Road.

“The Youth Centre is the finest example of organisations supporting local music in this area,” says Trinity Road’s Dale Hardman. “SATM helps bands meet and connect with other bands, and forms the local music allegiances necessary to form music-based communities in the suburbs.”

Ms Sellen suggests any local band looking to promote its skill and attract the attention of the southern music fraternity should enter the Battle of the Bands. Entry to Battle of the Bands for non-band members is $10 for a three-day pass, $5 for one day, and $15 for a family one-day pass. The bands will play at the Reynella Enterprise & Youth Centre, 10 Main South Road, Reynella, between 7 and 11 pm each day.
