A stunning exhibition of artwork and photography created by marginalised and disadvantaged young people will open to the public from the 24th November at The Muse, TAFE Ultimo Campus in Harris Street Ultimo. The exhibition, Through My Eyes, showcases the works of 22 students enrolled in Mission Australia’s Creative Youth Initiatives (CYI) Artworks! program which is accredited through TAFE Outreach NSW... CYI is a service helping young people aged 16-25, who are facing many and varied challenges in their lives such as, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse homelessness and family breakdown. Well known Australian artist Lindy Lee will open the exhibition. The evening will be hosted by television personality and journalist Catriona Rowntree. More than 300 artworks will be on display including paintings, sculptural pieces and photographs. Works are for sale to the public. Mission Australia’s Jane Gillings, one of the coordinators of the program and practicing artist said that the exhibition will offer people a unique insight into the thoughts and feelings of young people who are often not heard or valued. “At Creative Youth Initiatives, our aim is to build students’ self-esteem, improve their communication skills and provide positive learning experiences,” Ms Gillings said. “The creative process is liberating for our students. It gives them a form of communication that isn’t too confronting and provides a chance to express ideas about the challenges they face in life. “The exhibition is a great opportunity for the community to support young people’s creative expression whilst buying an original piece of art they can enjoy,” she added. For interviews with the artists prior to the opening, to access print quality images of the work or to speak with one of the program coordinators, please contact: Patrick Flynn 0407 411 256 ‘Through My Eyes’ Exhibition
