Green Corps team to restore Hans Heysen property

PDF Print E-mail
15-12-2008
blog-leavesRestoration of the Adelaide Hills landscape that inspired so many of South Australian artist Hans Heysen’s acclaimed works is the aim of a major Mission Australia Green Corps initiative to be launched in Hahndorf next week.

Mission Australia Operations Manager for Employment Services Harry Douvartzidis said the project would improve the biodiversity of The Cedars property, the Hahndorf home of Sir Hans Heysen, and its acclaimed Historic Artists Walk...
The Cedars Green Corps project can be seen in progress at 1.30pm Monday 15 December at the Cedars, Heysen Rd, Hahndorf.

It coincides with the staging of the Hans Heysen exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia, which is on show until February.

Mr Douvartzidis said 10 young people from the Adelaide Hills region had joined the Green Corps team to assist with restorative work including the collection of seeds, planting and weed removal, water monitoring, and the construction of nesting boxes and a shade house.

“The Green Corps team will work with the local Landcare group, Trees Please, which has been assisting with natural environmental restoration for many years,” Mr Douvartzidis said.

“By working with the group that knows the area so well, the Green Corps volunteers are most able to provide valuable assistance while learning from people experienced in working in natural restoration projects – all of which helps the volunteers’ future employment opportunities.”

The Adelaide Hills Council has provided tools and technical support for the project, which is scheduled to continue until May. Green Corps is an Australian Government program, administered by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations in consultation with the Department of Environment and Heritage.

It gives young volunteers the chance to work on important environmental and cultural heritage projects for 26 weeks, and to attain work experience, accredited training and leadership development. Green Corps members are paid an allowance, and gain recognised qualifications in occupational health and safety, first Aid and horticulture.

“We’re delighted to be able to help restore such important cultural and environmental heritage in South Australia - and to expose the young people to new skills and an insight into one of Australia’s most important painters,” Mr Douvartzidis said.

It is one of four to be conducted by Green Corps teams in metropolitan and regional areas of South Australia in December. The other projects are:
• The Mt Crawford Native Forest Connectivity Project (based in Mt Crawford) – collecting
data for long term planning, ground projects for land management and heritage
preservation, including fencing, and construction of a walking trail bridge and boardwalk
• Caring for Tjilbruke (Marion) – important cultural and environmental works along the Tjilbruke Trail, which hosts important Kaurna Dreaming sites and stories along Adelaide’s southern coast
• Coastal Care at Alexandrina (Goolwa) – establishment of community gardens, ongoing works to protect fragile coastal regions, construction of chain and timber boardwalks. “These projects not only benefit the local communities but also help young people in those areas
develop new skills and gain valuable experience,” Mr Douvartzidis said.
