Mission Australia Court Support Service

Every day across the greater Sydney area many victims of crime are attending court without the information and support they are entitled to under the NSW Charter of Victims Rights.

Going to court can be a confusing and stressful experience - many even find it frightening. For some victims, being at court may mean facing someone who has hurt or abused them. Giving evidence can often mean reliving a traumatic experience. Mission Australia Court Support Service aims to help minimise the potential negative effects for victims attending court.

If you are interested in supporting victims of crime, have good communication skills and some counselling experience you can apply to be a volunteer court support worker. If you would like to volunteer in this role, you will ideally have a minimum qualification of basic counselling skills from an accredited provider.

Mission Australia Court Support Service provides intensive and ongoing training as well as supervision, and volunteers will be part of a dynamic, professional team supporting victims through the court process.

The next intake for court support training will commence in August 2010.

Rossmore Community Preschool – Maintenance and Cleaning

Miller Pathways comprises of three programs, Communities for Children, Miller Family Resource Centre and Miller Pathways Supported Playgroups. We provide services for families and children and also support early intervention and prevention programs to assist disadvantaged families by providing resources and assistance.

Rossmore Community Preschool is located at 631 Bringelly Road, Rossmore.

We are seeking volunteers to assist with some maintenance and cleaning of the preschool-sheds, the equipment indoors and outdoors, tables, chairs, walls, kitchen and etc

We are looking at doing this during 7-17th December. It may not necessarily be for the whole 2 weeks but at least we are hoping to complete the maintenance during this time. It will be dependent on how many volunteers we find to help us.

Normally the staff do all this and we close the preschool early, so there are no children on site but this year we cannot afford to close early and it is not safe for staff to be cleaning when the children are at preschool.

Carpenter/Builder - South Western Youth Peer Education, Liverpool

South Western Youth Peer Education provides unique creative and educational opportunities for young people in the highly disadvantaged suburb of Miller, in South West Sydney. SWYPE strives to engage at risk and marginalized young people 12 to 25 years and works on crime prevention through education and training programs, recreation programs, community projects and alternative education programs such as drama, music and writing skills. SWYPE aims to increase young people’s self esteem, to help motivate them towards further training, education or to employment.

Many of the young people accessing SWYPE face complex issues in their lives including economic difficulties, family breakdown, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, anti-social behaviour and poor education. Twenty-five per cent of clients come from overseas and 17 per cent are from non-English speaking or Aboriginal and Torres Strait island backgrounds. The program also works with young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, and who have come into contact with the juvenile justice system.

At the moment, we have a recording studio at our centre in Miller (Liverpool). It has been constructed on a limited budget, and it has sound proofing, however, we believe that we can make some structural improvements to make the recording studio a better place in numerous ways that would benefit the young people, the quality of the sound and recording, and make the studio feel more professional.

At this stage, we are seeking a builder or carpenter with a creative mind that would be willing to visit our centre and suggest some renovations, or structural improvements that might make the studio a better place. We are after someone who can volunteer their expertise and assist us with our improvements.

If you've got some useful and handy skills, we'd love to hear from you.
