Play Plus Toy Library – Library Assistant,  Mission Australia Early Learning Service – Elizabeth Vale

Mission Australia Early Learning Services has been provided funding to establish a toy library based at our Elizabeth Vale site. This project aims to provide a service where parents can borrow a variety of fun, educational, age-appropriate and interactive toys, books, puzzles, and games on a regular basis. Play Plus Toy Library aims to support local low income families by promoting attachments through early exposure to educational concepts (e.g. numeracy and literacy). Educational Toys are expensive and out of reach for many of out families. By providing new play materials every week or two, parents on low incomes can significantly contribute towards the development and education of their child as well as assist their child to become school ready.

We are seeking a volunteer to help with the following:

  1. Work with other volunteers to ensure smooth operations at the toy library
  2. Assists with administration needs within the toy library
  3. Maintain cleanliness and good hygiene inside the toy library
  4. Communicate with children and families for feedback and research purposes
  5. Assists with stock-take for 2 nights every 3 months
  6. Other duties as directed by Project Manager or Centre Director at Elizabeth Vale Early Learning Service

The Volunteers will have training with the co-coordinator and Centre Director before beginning the project and will have ongoing support throughout the project. At this stage a timetable will be produced and made available, as well as guidelines, who to contact etc.

The main objective for the volunteer will be to provide support for staff and parents at the Elizabeth Vale Early Learning Service. The volunteers will be in charge of bookkeeping and communication with parents borrowing and returning resources.

We are hoping to work with the following project plan:

  • Before 31st March 2010 – Toy Library to be operational
  • 31st March - 31st October 2010 – 6 monthly reports to CBSA
  • 31st March – 31st October – Provide Weekly reports to Co-ordinator on specifics
  • By 31st October: Collate and present research findings using template provided by Co-ordinator

It will be essential for the volunteer to have proven experience with good written and verbal English skills and administrative experience.

The Volunteer will have the opportunity to be within the centre for three days a week for full days. This will allow ample time for all duties.

Due to the nature of the environment, we are seeking volunteers that are responsible, can work with little supervision, are enthusiastic and compassionate to the needs of our clients. They will also be required to undergo a police check and working with children check.

As we are looking for future funding for other Toy Libraries within Mission Australia, any relevant feedback will help us to improve activities for future volunteers. Volunteers will also receive thank you certificates from the children and staff at Mission Australia Early Learning Service.
