Chigwell House, Children’s activities organiser

Mission Australia Centre, Chigwell House opened its doors to the Community as a Community Service Centre, on the 14th April 2008. Since that time we have established a number of services at Chigwell House. The Centre offers space to other services to meet up with clients who live in this area and are unable to attend appointments in Hobart.

Recently, The Smith Family conducted a series of consultations and focus groups in which the community identified its desire for a program to connect families to early learning opportunities for their children. Mission Australia has formed a partnership with The Smith Family to implement the Parents Staying Connected Program. The Smith Family and Mission Australia are seeking a Volunteer who has an interest in planning and implementing structured activities for small children, one - seven years in age. The Volunteer would need to be available from 9.30am – 2pm on a Friday. There is an element to this role of accompanying the children on outings at times with their parents.

Key responsibilities would involve the following:
  • Assist the Family Liaison Officer with the organising and delivery of structured activities for the children
  • Assist with the support of group for the mentor/mentees. Accompany Children, parents and other volunteers on outings

At times we would like a volunteer to assist with cooking for our community events. This would involve preparing, cooking and cleaning. The events/BBQ’s are held occasionally on weekends. There may also be one off cooking opportunities on a Thursday from 11am - 1pm to cook for our elderly group.

Language, Literacy & Numeracy Tutor - Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart

Being a volunteer with our LLNP is a very rewarding experience! This is an opportunity for you to give back to your community, feel good about yourself by helping to build our students skills, confidence and self esteem. Volunteering with LLNP is useful work experience for any resume or to be a part of a community.

The role of the volunteer will be to assist the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program teachers in providing quality language, literacy and numeracy training to our clients to maximise their potential in forgoing strong links in the community and the work place and thus finding pathways to a better life.

The key responsibilities are as follows:
  • To work with one student or a small group of students to assist them in completing tasks allocated by the LLNP teacher
  • To provide direction, instruction and support to the student(s)
  • To make notes about the task(s) and provide these to the LLNP teacher as requested.
  • To prepare any material needed for work with students (as directed by LLNP teacher)
  • To make suggestions to LLNP teachers as to suitable activities for students.
  • Any other reasonable tasks as required by LLNP teachers.

The volunteer tutor is free to nominate the amount of time they are prepared to commit, providing it is no less than 2 hours per week. The Volunteer will be supported by the teacher of LLNP and the Services Manager.

Mission Australia Launceston, Reception/Admin


We are looking for volunteers who are interested in general reception tasks for the Mission Australia site at Elizabeth Street.

Duties would involve answering the phones, covering the front desk/door, and other general tasks such as filing, photocopying, assisting staff from other programs, and assisting staff with development/preparation of materials and resources etc. We are hoping to be flexible around the volunteers commitments and availability.

Personal Helpers and Mentors Program, Launceston


The Personal Helpers and Mentors Program is one of the key initiatives of the Australian Government’s mental health reform package announced in the 2006 Federal Budget, and is also part of the Australian Government’s contribution to the COAG National Action Plan on Mental Health. A key element of the Personal Helpers and Mentors Program is its emphasis on community support and social connection as an integral component of recovery.

PHaM are very keen for volunteers. Our volunteers with PHaM assist with a variety of things including group activities with clients that we are in the process of developing i.e. walking group, book club, art group etc plus + assistance with community activities and PHaM BBQ + development of client newsletter etc.

U-Turn Mentor - Moonah

U-Turn is a diversionary motor program working with 15 -20 year olds. We are looking for people who are skilled and interested in working with young ‘at risk’ people.

Many of our clients are quite vulnerable and can be extremely challenging at times. If you are interested in volunteering your time with this group, you will need to be sensitive to the client needs.

Our clients are particularly in need of positive role models. Our clients attend a 10 week course, however we are hoping to set up a mentoring program for our our clients outside of U-Turn hours and once the course has finished to provide ongoing support. Mentors generally catch up with the clients on a weekly or fortnightly basis for an hour or so, to help them with various tasks of their program, and also serve as an external contact to help provide guidance and support. Training and support would also be provided for the mentors.

Youth Beat Support Worker

  • Help youth get their lives back on track!


If you have a desire to help people rise above the challenges life has thrown their way, then you already have something in common with Mission Australia, who’s work helps disadvantaged Australians everyday.

We are seeking committed and outgoing people to volunteer for the Youth Beat service, which operates throughout Hobart. Youth Beat is a mobile service, which engages with disadvantaged and homeless young people, providing them with support, someone to talk to and referrals to other services.


As a Youth Beat volunteer, you will be responsible for assisting Youth Beat clients, by providing information on available services and developing supportive and trusting relationships with youth who may have nowhere else to turn. You will be part of a team, working with a Youth Beat staff member at all times.

The service operates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday evenings/nights, and volunteers will be required to commit to at least one 4 hour shift. Hours may vary dependant upon need.


Experience Required:

  • Great communication skills
  • Ability to relate well to young people from a range of backgrounds
  • Ability to follow directions from Youth Beat Staff
  • Flexible availability
  • Some background in Youth Work or Community Welfare would be beneficial, but not essential
  • All volunteers will receive full training and support.
