Bike Program - Bike Repairs

Mission Australia is a non profit organisation that runs youth services in Darwin and Palmerston Northern Territory. The Youth Beat program seeks to engage with Youth who are on the streets at night.

In April this year MA will be running a workshop to teach kids to fix and maintain bikes. The team have collected donated spare parts, tubes, tires, chains, nuts and bolts and other assortment of spare parts including the tools to get the bikes up and running.

This workshop will be modelled along the lines of an extremely successful workshop called Deadly Treadly and Bike Fixim that ran on communities around Central Australia. This workshop was so popular and successful with the youth of communities that it was common for them to repair up to 45 bikes on one visit to a community. The main reason of its popularity was that bikes are one of the greatest possessions a young person could have.

Universally bike riding for kids opens up possibilities that no other activity will, it can be used for transport, independence, solo or in a group, raced or for tricks and leads to many memorable adventures. The Youth that Mission Australia work with are some of the most disadvantaged youth in Australia and children in this scenario appreciate bikes more so than anyone else as it might be their only toy or an essential method of transport.

The program is very simple - the kids bring in their bike usually with two flat tires and a couple of parts missing. The volunteer bike mechanics instruct the kids on how to fix the tyres usually by doing one themselves. They have to be inventive when coming up with parts.

The volunteer would be challenged by heat, enthusiastic kids and working with minimal provisions. The program will run in April in the Darwin/Palmerston area.
Volunteers will be required to complete a police check.
