Mission Australia CEO, James Toomey said:

At Mission Australia, the safety and wellbeing of our employees and the people we serve has always been our priority during the pandemic.

“As a community services and community housing organisation, our colleagues have been on the frontline of the pandemic response, ensuring vital services and safe homes are provided to some of Australia’s most vulnerable people, including people who are homeless and experiencing disadvantage, people with physical and mental health challenges and people with disability.

“We are currently consulting with staff on a new policy which proposes that all staff, volunteers and contractors would be expected to have a vaccination against the COVID-19 virus. Mission Australia's Board and Executive Team believe a workforce which is fully vaccinated in respect of COVID-19 is the best way to protect our employees as well as the people we serve and the communities we work in right across Australia.

“As an organisation, we operate under a model of connection and collaboration across sites, services and offices. Delivering on this requires opportunities for face-to-face connection across all our settings. Workers may at times be close contacts of members of the community vulnerable to illness, or colleagues who are directly serving members of the community vulnerable to illness. Along with risk assessments, preventative measures, infection control practices and PPE, vaccinations are an important part of ensuring the safety of all workers.”

Mission Australia’s staff consultation will run through until the end of October. We will finalise our position in early November and communicate the outcome to all our stakeholders when appropriate to do so.
