Mission Australia releases Annual Report 2017

Some highlights from the 2016-17 year:

• 21,000 young people responded to our 15th annual youth survey in 2016. The findings provide evidence to inform our services and be a strong voice for disadvantaged youth.
• We introduced our Strategic Plan 2017-20, which builds on the solid foundations laid over the past three years. The new plan responds to challenges and opportunities as we pursue our goal of reducing homelessness and strengthening communities across Australia.
• Benjamin Short Grove aged care facility opened in Orange, NSW, providing homes for 60 elderly people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and are financially or socially disadvantaged.
• David Martin Place – our youth detox facility – opened, joining our existing Triple Care Farm rehab centre on 110 acres in the NSW Southern Highlands.
• The Aspire consortium, comprising Mission Australia Housing, Frasers Property Australia and Citta Property Group, were appointed to redevelop Sydney’s Ivanhoe estate. At least 950 social housing homes and 128 affordable homes will be created in a vibrant, safe and sustainable community with Mission Australia providing on-site support services.
• We worked towards developing our second Reconciliation Action Plan, which subsequently launched in August 2017. It includes how we intend to contribute to reducing the gap in living standards between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians.
• The Navigator pilot program in Victoria was extended for 12 months. The program received an additional case manager to meet the higher than anticipated need.
• Works were undertaken to expand our Drug and Alcohol Youth Service (DAYS) in Perth. Officially opened in August 2017, DAYS caters for 12-21 year olds and now offers 10 beds for in-patient detox, as well as a new dining room and redesigned kitchen and courtyard.

• Our Supported Accommodation Facilities in Cairns won the Queensland Australasian Housing Institute award for Excellence in Social Housing.
• We were presented with the Voice Project Change Challenge Award ahead of more than 800 other organisations. The award recognises positive change within large-scale organisations, and reflects the significant progress we’ve made in employee engagement.

We look forward to more opportunities in 2017-18. Supported by our funders, donors and partners, we will continue to give struggling Australians the assistance they need to get back on their feet with dignity and gain independence.
