This is the fifth national report on young people’s mental health produced by Mission Australia and the Black Dog Institute. The report reveals important insights about prevalence of psychological distress in 15-19 year olds over time (2012 to 2020). Then, focusing on 2020 data, we look at the characteristics of young people living with psychological distress, explore impact of psychological distress on experiences in daily life, and identify barriers that might prevent them from seeking help when they need it.

This is the first report that has been produced as a result of an important partnership between Mission Australia and Orygen. The report looks into the types of impact experienced by young people during the pandemic, and the particular groups of young people who have faced more challenges. The report also details how the experience of different and multiple impacts relate to increases in stress, loneliness, and psychological distress, as well as decreases in feelings of control, happiness and mental health and wellbeing.

This is Mission Australia’s fourth youth homelessness report. The report uses 2021 Youth Survey data to understand the experiences of young people in Australia who were homeless for the first time during the COVID-19 period. It looks at the prevalence of first-time youth homelessness during that time, explores the risk factors for first-time youth homelessness in this group and provides an overview of their mental health and housing situation.
