Reconnect is funded by the Dept. of Social Services (DSS). The community-based program supports young people between 12 and 18 who are at risk of becoming homeless, homeless, or experiencing family conflict, living in Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Ivanhoe, & Menindee. Reconnect provides early intervention support, accommodation, counselling, mediation, with a strong emphasis on family reconciliation, education & community engagement. The program is voluntary (self-referrals) or referrals can come from anyone that has a link with the young person including family members, friends, schools, housing, police, other community stakeholders, Youth Justice, accommodation services, Centrelink, child protection services.

The young people that Reconnect works with face a variety of issues including:

  • Unstable accommodation and housing
  • Poverty and financial hardship
  • Domestic violence and family crisis
  • Alcohol and drug abuse
  • Parental unemployment
  • Disengagement from education
  • Mental and physical health issues
  • Challenges of being a newly arrived refugee, and a survivor of torture and trauma.

The program ensures young people and their families are provided with access to a wide variety of networks and services to support their needs including:

  • Education programs and services
  • Centrelink and employment services
  • Housing and accommodation services
  • Life skills development programs
  • Mental health and health support and services
  • Parenting support, education programs and services.
  • Who we assist

    We assist young people who are aged 12 - 18 years who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and their families.

    Eligibility criteria

    To access Reconnect, you must be 12-18 years of age, be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless or experiencing family conflict living in Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Ivanhoe, & Menindee. This program is voluntary.

    Referral process

    The program is voluntary and referrals can come from anyone that has a link with the young person at risk. There can be self-referrals, from family members, friends, schools, housing, police, court house, other community stakeholders, Youth Justice, accommodation services, Centrelink, child protection services, etc.
