With colourful lights and glittering trees appearing in shopping centres and on street corners, Christmas often arrives well before 25 December. Alongside familiar Australian traditions - from gathering with loved ones to sharing festive meals - many people also look for moments of quiet reflection.

As a Christian-founded organisation serving communities across Australia, Mission Australia invites you to pause and reflect on the deeper meaning of Christmas through these seven Bible verses, which speak to hope, love and the gift of new life found in the birth of Jesus.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16

“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him.”

John 1:9-10

“But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.”

Galatians 4:4-5

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

1 John 5:11

“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:10-12

“The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Luke 1:35

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6
